We often here the term ‘muscle knot’, but what exactly this mean? Is your muscle really get tied in knots? No, not really.
Muscle knot is basically a lumpy spot in the muscle or fascial tissue also known as known as myofascial trigger points. This happens when various muscle fiber starts to stick each other and become adhered. Muscle knot may occur due to poor posture, prolonged sitting without movement, stress, lifting related injuries and dehydration.
Muscle knots are quite common but are not harmless. If they were not treated, the muscle tissue will lose elasticity and poor posture. But the good news is there are lot of things you can do to treat and prevent muscle knots.
1.Drink water:
The major risk of forming the muscle knot is dehydration. You need to make sure that you drink enough water in a day. Staying hydrated improves circulation and flushes out waste material from the muscle cell. This can also reduce the risk of injury by acting as the lubricant for joint and relieving some strain on muscle.
2.Stretching:
Stretching promotes blood flow to muscle tissue and improves rate of recovery thus treating problems like muscle knots, muscle spasm and injury. It is always useful to stretch before doing any heavy activity like working out in gym. It helps your muscle to adapt to something other than sedentary activity.
3.Improve posture:
Improving posture is the simple way to prevent the muscle knot. Sitting in the same position for long time is not good for your muscle. Sitting in a posture in which muscle is not strained and blood flow is not interrupted will prevent muscle knots and cramps.
4.Massage:
Massage therapy will not only prevent the muscle knot but also a good therapy to relieve the muscle knot. If you are in pain for a real while, physio-therapy can also help. You should perform some physical therapy exercise so as to increase the muscle flexibility and mobility. This will also keep your muscle healthy, pliable and oxygenated.
5.Eat nutritional food:
Muscle knot and muscle spasm usually caused due to low mineral levels in your body. If you have any problem related to muscle, consider increasing your intake for the calcium and potassium by eating more fruits and vegetables. Multivitamins is another alternate option which you can consider to fulfill your daily nutritional requirements.
So, move around, stay hydrated, eat good food, perform exercise regularly, and yes, don’t forget to stretch before the exercises.
