The workmen compensation insurance policy offers legal liability coverage in respect of compensation paid to employees for bodily injury or death caused due to accidents, occupational ailments arising out of and during the employment tenure. Monitored by the Ministry of Labour, it is a compensation which is paid under a scheme formulated under the Workmen’s Compensation Act of India.

- Permanent total disablement
- Permanent partial disablement
- Temporary disablement
- Legal costs incurred if any
Further, the policy can be extended to cover medical expenses incurred on necessary treatment
Exclusions of the policy*
Though the policy aims to offer wide legal liability coverage, there are some events which are not covered:
- Any injury caused by accident or diseases directly linked to war invasion and other perils
- Any injury or accident which doesn’t cause fatality or partial disablement for a period exceeding three days
- Liability towards contractor’s employees, unless specifically mentioned
- Accidents arise under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- If there is a disregard for the safety measures

Recently, the Lok Sabha passed The Employees Compensation (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The new legislation offers a compensation of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh to employees and their dependents in case of injury caused due to industrial accidents. Further, whatever an establishment or factory is, it is important for them to display the Act in Hindi, English or regional languages for the complete information of workers.
